We can turn what was

into what should be.

Working to turn one of the most impressive structures in America's Past into a Beacon of Hope for America's Future.

The Time for action is NOW. The County this site is located in is adamant about destroying incredible piece of history to build low income housing. THIS MUST NOT BE ALLOWED.

The Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company Homes are still after NEARLY A CENTURY completely structurally sound and still have families living in them. This fact makes them the last structure of their kind that are still standing and still being used to house people. Visit our PAST link to learn more about other locations such as Concrete City, and Gunkanjima, Japan (Hashima Island)

The Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company Homes were the World's First Modern Apartment Complex ever built. Its predecessors that you will find on our PAST link page lacked certain amenities such as hot and cold running water, indoor plumbing and indoor bathroom facilities. These structures designed by Herding and Boyd Architects, followed Thomas Edison's original plan for fireproof homes.

These buildings are a last remaining example of the Ingenuity and Design Superiority that America was so known for during our industrial revolution, and a testament to our goal as a people to provide a better quality of life for all of those who came to our shores regardless of race, creed color or religion. Equipped in 1918 with every modern amenity available at the time, these structures still stand today as a monument to the men AND women who helped build our great nation. No where on Earth was there anything that rivaled or even compared to these structures which still today have their ORIGINAL TILE ROOFS STILL INTACT AND NOT LEAKING.

PLEAS HELP US

We have the volunteers, the plan, and the technology. All we need is some support from America to preserve a National Treasure.

Visit our PRESENT link to see what we have done so far. We have turned fields of garbage and overgrown brush that were being used by criminals to hide not only themselves but stolen merchandise as well. We cut the grass at over three dozen units that we do not own in order to keep the neighborhood looking right. We have accepted financial responsibility including thousands of dollars in back taxes from owners who no longer wanted their property at this great historical site.

We have been working closely with local and state government as well as individuals interested in preserving the great history of this place. We are working to form Iron Soup Historical Preservation Committee, a non profit organization to gain control of and oversee this fantastic piece of American History.

Currently we have obtained several units either through purchase or through previous owners signing over their rights to units at our historic location. Please Contact Us in regards to how you can help us save this important piece of history.

Our Plan

Once again much of what we have already done is located at our PRESENT link but there is much more to be done. Cutting grass, cleaning up basements and assuming liability for the abandoned property here is only the tip of the iceberg. County officials are adamant about destroying this complex in order to build low income housing. The only way to stop demolition plans and insure the continuation of the existence of this site is to completely and securely board up ALL THE REMAINING EMPTY UNITS and paint the rows that are in the worst shape. The cost to perform this task would only be about 40-50k which compared to the cost of many historical renovations is actually quite inexpensive.

This would cover all the supplies and materials needed to do the work as well as hiring the professionals who will guide and assist our team of volunteers to insure the job is done right. If you would like volunteer to help with the preservation efforts or are interested in contributing financially please Contact Us

The Future

What was will be again.

When the Sheet and Tube Company Homes were built they were designed to address the problems of the day in regards to providing decent living quarters for the workers of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company. These needs were addressed in a manner that far exceeded any expectations making these units the most modern living space ever built at the time.

In that same spirit we hope to restore the outside facade of this site back to its original beauty, while implementing a new and exciting plan to create totally environmentally friendly living units that run totally and completely on the power of the sun and the wind. This is a totally and completely possible which the technologies that are currently available. Visit our TECHNOLOGY page to see links and information regarding inexpensive windmills, solar power systems, grey water and more. Also you will find some new technologies no one has ever seen before that we hope to implement in the design of a totally self sustaining apartment complex.

Learn about our plans to offer low to no cost housing to area college students maintaining superior grades in disciplines of study that benefit society such as science, environmental studies, engineering and others. The mills and the company that built these places are long gone, but the spirit of innovation, cooperation, and ingenuity still exist and what better way to keep that alive than to encourage and help young people who are working towards a better world.
